1. Your Design Challenge: ORGANIZE The front hall sets the mood for your entire home. Consider how to accommodate all the room's functions as beautifully as possible. At the very least you need a console, and if you're short on storage, consider a dresser. Outfit the surface with nice trays and bowls for mail, keys and sunglasses. Keep a trash can for immediately tossing the junk mail. Closet-door or wall hooks encourage coat and bag hanging rather than dumping. If you have children, try to give each a basket in the closet for hats and gloves. It's nice to have a chair or bench for changing shoes, a mirror for last-minute lipstick checks, and a lamp or sconces for warm light.

2. Your Happy Place Choose a color or two that harmonizes with the tableware you already own, and collect things like linens, glasses, dessert plates, or platters in those hues. This is a fantastic way to liven up a plain, white table setting. And if you can, set the table the night before a dinner party, so you can really take pleasure in tending to the details.

3. Be Party-Ready All the Time! Drink: The simplest and chicest thing is to have a drinks tray or table always set up. Include a mix of pretty glasses, an ice bucket, a lovely pitcher, and bottles of soda and water. When the bell rings, just add ice and limes.

Food: Devote space in your pantry or on a shelf for go-to party essentials: crackers, dip, chips, nuts—whatever you like to serve. Keep on hand a collection of attractive bowls and cocktail napkins, and you'll be able to set a spread—instantly!

Mood: Nice, flattering light makes us feel good. So nix the harsh, direct light from overhead fixtures in favor of the softer glow from floor and table lamps. Also, keep some votive candles and a couple of hurricane lanterns for setting around the room.

Scent: The first thing you notice about a home is how it smells. Use naturally fragrant cleaning products. If you find a scented candle or fresh potpourri you love, stock up on it. Any scent you like, whether perfume or linen spray, can be used on upholstery, bedding or just spritzed into the air.

Sorry I couldn't make the Fashion Show this Sat but this happened :(

Today I went to the ER and got an MRI so luckily it came out clear. I'm in sooooo much pain, but they wouldn't give me any meds. SUCKS! Ibuprofen does not do it! It even hurts to lay down or do anything! Sucks!
MY FACE GOT SMASHED and so did my Glasses. My wrist and knee, teeth, lips and other aches are also bumming me out.

I have NO glasses. I can't see AT ALL without them! I'm also completely out contacts too so basically I'm blind and in pain.

So if you'd like to be a pal and help me out! You = my hero!

Sorry about missing out on the Fashion Show but I couldn't help it :(

I just realized a Prime Time TV Actress has ordered this item from my Smashing Darling boutique!

I know it has to be her because her stylist often suggests items from Smashing Darling!

What do I do? I want to ask her if its ok for me to disclose the fact that she bought my dress. Maybe even bribe her with a free gift so I can get a picture of her wearing the dress? Now that my computer is working I'll ask the ladies of Smashing Darling what to do!

I also have to tell the lovely actress it's back ordered b/c its super popular so probably won't be getting it till Monday :x

The funny thing is the actress actually looks a bit like the model wearing the dress, Ms Shannon ;)

Review: McQ for Target

People are hating on the McQ line for Target and I completely understand their grievances.

My personal complaint is that the website advertised the release date as March 4th, which is the date it was released online, yet the line hit the actual Target stores March 1st. I feel that was completely misleading and they really should have had both dates be the same. Frustrating.

People are saying that the clothes look cheap.

99% of the line does look pretty chintzy. However, you have to realize the clothes ARE cheap. The most expensive thing in the Target line is $130, while, right now, on Net-A-Porter, the most expensive McQ piece is $845. Remember the Target line is a diffusion of McQ line, not the Alexander McQueen label. There is a difference between the two lines. If people were expecting the Target line to look more like Alexander McQueen's namesake label then there is obviously going to be quite a difference and greater potential for disappointment. Having said that, as far as design goes, the Target line is surprising faithful to the current McQ collection and is being offered for approximately 1/10 of the price. ( Compare for yourself: Target vs Net-A-Porter.)

Are you going to get the same quality? No. Are some of the Target pieces overpriced for the quality? Yes. Yet I wouldn't completely dismiss every piece in the line. Trying something on in harsh florescent lighting in an ugly dressing room that smells like B.O. is not going to make you feel magical. Imagine what the pieces will look like in a normal setting. I would also advise against wearing head-to-toe Target under any circumstance. With the right pairing of higher end accessories that you may already own, you could easily dress up the McQ for Target pieces.

Others say that the clothes are ill fitting.

The cuts are based on Junior sizes. The clothing may fit a petite woman but even then there are issues. I am usually a size 0 or 2 but in the Target line I'm a 5. Good thing I'm not hung up about numbers. Very rarely is ready-to-wear clothing truly ready-to-wear. I need to take most of my clothing to the tailor to ensure a proper fit. Every body type is different and you are completely in the right for NOT buying something that is ill fitting or just plain wrong for your body type. The same can be said for color, not everyone can pull of bright pink or gray depending on a persons skin tone or hair color or eye color. Or you may just not like those colors and that's okay too.

The bottom line is the tag line "Design For All" is bit misleading.

Price wise, Target makes designer clothing more accessible, but that doesn't mean the pieces are for everyone. If you are the kind of person who would wear the original McQ line if you could afford it then there are some pieces in this line that you might fancy.

San Diego Fashion Meet-up

Last week I had the pleasure of attending a Fashion Industry Networking Mixer, hosted by FOCUS (Fashion Opportunities Connect US.) The event was held at WildSide Photography Studio in North Park.
I met up with Drea and Paloma, students and stylists who work with designer Stacie May. I first met them at the Kevan Christine photo shoot we did a few weeks ago (see previous post.) An interview of them will be coming in the very first installment of a Vlog/show I am producing. Stay tuned!

I also had the chance to catch up with a few designers I know! Annie Supinger of Eclectic Couture, Isha B. of Chocolate Cherries, and designer Brooke Mrdjenovich. Brooke carries her own line, Brooke Catherine, on her online boutique BCatThreads! In addition to her own line she also carries Eclectic Couture, Chocolate Cherries and my line, Black Heart Bunny!

The guest speaker was Ms Crosby Noricks of, the #1 Fashion PR Blog, PRCouture. Besides being a superstar blogger, she has a long and impressive resume which includes Social Media Strategist at Red Door Interactive and PR instructor for the Fashion Marketing and Management Program at the Art Institute.
She is endearing, witty, insightful and her talk was very motivating. Besides providing insight into the world Fashion PR and the power of blogging, she also shared with us what fashion means to her on an intimate level. The story behind the her mother's mini dress which she was wearing as a blouse that evening was especially moving.
I was first introduced to Ms Noricks' work when she started following me on Twitter. She eloquently explained how sharing ones personal and professional experiences in this medium builds relationships in a way that other forms of social media cannot. I personally adore Twitter. It has helped me connect with other professionals in a way I could never have otherwise. It's an amazing and useful tool and I urge everyone to a chance if you haven't already.

Size 7 brown pair and black pair of ankle boots made out of genuine snakeskin and leather! Both pairs are sold separately! It is very rare to find accessories made out of snakeskin and when found they are very expensive!

Both pairs have had the bottoms redone so they are almost like new! The lining has also been replaced with this is awesome buffalo red and black plaid flannel. Heels are also in excellent condition. Toes are rounded. 4 inch heel.

Luella Spring 2009

A few months ago I bought a vintage hat/headband that is almost IDENTICAL to this one featured on Luella's Spring '09 runway! I got it for $3 and it is in MINT condition. I don't think it was ever worn. I think it would look great with an lavender/orange floral dress. I wish I could find one. If not maybe I can make one (!!!) Or maybe I'll find a nice lavender dress. I absolutely love this color combo. Also I know there is name for this type of head piece, but it escapes me. If you know what I'm talking about please let me know. Or if you have seen a cute dress that would look good with this headpiece ... holla! :)

Hey look it's me chillaxing at The Office, behind the scenes of Black Heart Bunny photo shoot!

Still anticipating getting back the OFFICIAL photos from Black Heart Bunny's last two photo shoots but I just couldn't wait to debut some of my brand new pieces! Here are some snap shots of just two of the new pieces, some fun pics taken behind the scenes while the official photographer was setting up.

First of all, I revamped the vary popular lace skull print, by making in oversized and putting it on the also very popular black skirt dress style. Everyone loves the cute, fit, versatility and comfort of this dress. Available for $28. this print will also be available on the very popular pima cotton cardigans and a brand new blouse style!

The next design is brand new! I'm so excited about it I know it's going to be a big hit! The model actually bought the dress and the cardigan version off me at the shoot! She wants to be a buyer after she finishes her run at SDSU, so I took it as an extra big compliment! I was also pleasantly surprised to find out we actually knew each other from High School! So cool! I love San Diego! So cool to see the girl I knew grow up into a fierce young lady!

But I digress, back to the design...

I was very much inspired by seeing feathers sewn on to many haute pieces of clothing, and although I loved the look I thought I could create the same affect in a less costly and more practical manner. I experimented in many ways with this new design. Due to the printing process each piece is 100% unique.
I custom blended many of the inks to create an iridecent look with golden and metallic colors. Although it is not visable in the photos the areas where the feathers overlap looks amazing! A beatiful gradient affect is created. You have to see it in person!
The print is featured on both the front and the back of the dress and will also be featured on pima cotton cardigans and blouses.
The dress is now available for just $28!

I love animation and I guess if you haven't been following my twitter, you don't know I went to see Coroline a few days ago, in 3D. It was awesome!

I'm also a big fan of the Quay Bros. and I think they really have a huge influence movies like Coroline, The Corpse Bride, a Nightmare Before Christmas ...

Rent "Phantom Museums" (or look them on youtube) and see for your self. The videos can be a bit hard to watch as they are not as commercial as the films they have influenced, but fascinating none the less. They also did the "Hospital Puppet" sequence in Frida.

It has been rainy for days and it just cleared up today! The coolest thing I saw was a ring of rainbows around the moon, and the clouds were passing behind the prisms, it looked kind of like the tie dye, only a lot more magical! Today I'm getting ready for the Black Heart Bunny phoot shoot that's going down tomorrow. I'm so glad it cleared up and is sunny again or else we would have had had resecduale. Will post the pics from the shoot as soon I get them. Still waiting for January's photo shoot pics but it takes some time. Also I am working on some new designs today, I'm really excited about the new Black Heart Bunny line and I hope you will love t much as I do!

Pretty Vacent

I’ve had these Vivienne Westwood Anglomania for what feels like a fashion eternity, hence they are not straight leg jeans (gasp!) I love them because they have this special treatment that makes the rips and holes black while keeping the rest of the jean this cool gray blue. Worn with Stella McCartney lace pumps. I am wearing a black matte lame bandeau from American under my shirt. Looks great under so many of my tops. Don’t you love it when one little inexpensive thing fixes a multitude of looks!

Speaking of inexpensive I got my jeans for a whooping $30! I paid a little extra to get the altered to my size but I have to do that with almost all my pants. My Stella McCartney shoes were only $100. For me part of the fun of fashion is the challenge getting things for the best possible price.

Love the neckline, the darts, the colors and the print! I’m also a bit obsessed with exposed zippers. Worn with Sam Edelman booties. Love the architectural heel and peep toe! They look uncomfortable but actually the opposite is true. I got an amazing deal on both of them, so that makes me love the look even more!

I was supposed to get my hair done in time for the day but that fell through and I couldn't wear my contacts since I lost my last one, so I looked a hot mess. Oh well. Have to work!

It was so great to meet such wonderful and talented people!

Can't wait to see the official photos and to work on the next photo shoot in February with another fantastic photographer. Even MORE NEW designs coming soon!!!

Once in awhile a get questions. This one came via a new myspace friend from the UK.

Question:

"random q but what qualifications did u get to work in the fashion industry xx "

Answer:

My qualifications include studies in fashion design, textile design, screen-printing, visual merchandising, jewelry making (cutting metal, soldering, etc) cosmetology, MAC pro make-up application, millinery (hat making,) wardrobe selection, photo fashion styling and writing. Everything else I know is self-taught. The Internet has plethora of information just waiting for you to tap into. I am also an Instructor’s Assistant at a college screen-printing class.

The most important things I have learned over the years are the importance of craftsmanship and self-discipline. The real life experience I have has also proved invaluable.

My advice to anyone who wants to be a fashion designer is to not make excuses and just start creating.
Also realize that it requires A LOT of hard work to turn your dreams into reality, but nothing beats selling something you made with your own hands and getting recognition for your designs! My designs are currently retailed on various sites online, in boutiques in San Diego and New York City, and were just published in Metro in the UK!

The New Year is really looking promising!

Today was a record day for online sales!
I was introduced to an amazing photographer through Trish of Smashing Darling, so an amazing photo shoot for Black Heart Bunny is being slated for the future.
I also spent the day shooting some test shots of personal style photos with another photographer, Thomas Phillip for another possible opportunity I am working towards :)

Here's part one of today's shoot. I'm not a model so I just did my best.

This look features my silk Alexander Wang top, Copper stirrup leggings from FXXI, Elie Tahari black heels and gold and onyx spider ring.

Bought a few things to update my wardrobe. Vena Cava floral dress and crocodile embossed Cynthia Vincent platform shooties/ booties. Got KILLER deals on both.

I think Vena Cava really nails the floral dress in this design. The color combo is amazing and the zipper, there isn't anything I don't like about this silk beauty. Also very versatile. I LOVE CHARTREUSE.

Round toed platform booties are the shoe de jour. Black and grey are very strong this season as well. I also love the quality of Cynthia Vincent shoes.

I have studied fashion, design, and beauty in order to pursue a career in design and styling, yet when I came across a Photo Styling Class I couldn't resist. There are classes for wardrobe selection and Cosmetology courses but its somewhat rare to find a class that focuses specifically on the wide and wonderful world of Fashion Photo Styling. Not only am I learning many wonderful things that will help me grow in my chosen field but it has also been very life affirming as I felt quite at home in this class. Instructing this fantastic class is Ms Susan Cox, who is a seasoned stylist, author and instructor . I was very honored when I learned Black Heart Bunny was featured on her blog !

Before I moved to NYC from Philadelphia, I spent most of my weekend jaunts trolling the shops and restaurants of the East Village, a neighborhood I still love for it’s refusal to cow-tow to Starbucks and other retail giants (although the rate of banks opening up on 2nd Avenue will make your head spin!)

I first happened upon Sophie’s store 2 summers ago and continue to hit her up for truly original designs. I think the small space speaks to the buyer's talent and keen eye for interesting pieces. I especially enjoy the fact that I rarely ever recognize any of the designers or labels. Sophie's room serves as a medium for new talent and those looking for the "next thing" in fashion. Plus, it always feels that much better to know your shirt/jacket/pants/etc came from an independent designer dedicated to creating and pursuing their vision :) "

First of all, I would like to apologize for the lack of posts lately. In addition to being insanely busy with school, sales and designing new items, my computer has also been acting weird and I need to reinstall photoshop.

Did an event at mesa college last Thursday and made killer sales.

AND Lastly I'm going to get the comforter and pillow set featured above from Dwell Studio for Target (its in mail!) I've been waiting for it for so long I thought it was never going to be sent. You can find the original of this design (that the one above is based on) at the Dwell website for over double the price I am getting it for including silk pillow! It has been very difficult for me to find something that would go with my bedroom. See this post to see my huge sweet cabinet! I guess some how I stumbled on black and yellow color combo. I went vintage shopping with Lisa, UCSD's fashion magazine (The Secret Scholar) editor. We scored some awesome vintage finds. A flight attendant was attempting to sell her large collection of hats at one of the stores and we snagged one each.

The hat I got looks a lot like the hat I posted earlier. Her are some pictures from the fun afternoon. Will show you the dresses I bought in a later post.

Black Heart Bunny participated in a Fashion Show fundraiser for UCSD's Fashion Magazine "Secret Scholar." The theme of the party was "Geeks and Chics."

I created Black Heart Bunny with these type of girls in mind; young beautiful, smart, success-minded young women! It was pleasure to meet such gorgeous young woman and to be part of this event. Hope to work with the Secret Scholar girls in the future!

Above is my second label. Use to print in back shirts. Looked good (don't judge by the bad photos!), but too time consuming to print.

I want to focus my time and energy on printing and creating the actual artwork on the shirts. I also think it will help me look more professional in the end. I feel like this is a crucial step in helping Black Heart Bunny move upwards and onwards! Yay! so excited.

Anyone like the new look of my blog?

According to Fashion Indie. Karl Lagerfeld is going to be in Grand Theft Auto 4. His character going to be a DJ. If this is true, it's totally weird. I love fashion and really like video games, but I never thought the worlds would really come together (read: cross promote) like this. Rockstar's games are very cool. The company has a studio based in San Diego too. They developed Red Dead Revolver, which is a very fun cool game.

I like this hat/headband. I'm starting my millinery class next Friday! Can't wait to see what I'm going to make.

This is my beloved yellow Drexel Heritage cabinet I bought at the Goodwill shop for a song. I bought it several months ago, but I never got a chance to blog about it. I love it so much. The craftsmanship is quite lovely. I can't wait to get my room together so I will feel more comfortable in it. I bought it because I needed something to put my clothing and accessories in it. I want my room to look like boutique. *sigh* Someday!

Friday:

I went to to the pre-portion of Pop Noir (my friends were doing hair for the fashion show.) It was the one year anniversary. MY CLOTHING WAS FEATURED AT THE VERY FIRST POP NOIR! ( I have fond memories. It was such a cool nite. It was packed! It was so amazing! Everyone loved my clothes! :D)

I talked to May (AKA MAYSTAR) and it was neat sharing our goals. It was interesting to reflect on how much I've accomplished in a year and what I hoped to accomplish. I met the delightful young lady who contributes to a local university's publication. I'm 99% sure Black Heart Bunny is getting a small blip in the publication. She is just the sweetest girl, so charming.

Saturday:

Woke up at dawn to get a bunch of printing done at school before starting my shift. Completed 2 screens at 50 promotional tote bags (which is the equivalent of 100 one color shirts, because I print both sides.) Then i put in 5.5 hours of work at the school. Total of 11 hours of hard physical labor! Totally looking forward to the new designs I'm going to churn out next weekend! YAY!
